The Life of Iranian Women Before the Revolution of 1979

I came across this picture on a Reddit post. This picture was apparently taken at the The Student Lounge at the University of Tehran in 1971, eight years before the revolution in 1979.

In an Opinion piece for the New York Times, Iranians Taking Solace in the Past, Camelia Entekhabifard writes, “The first, second and now third generations of young Iranians born after 1979 have no memory of the country’s pre-revolutionary era.”

Me either. I don’t think I’ve ever thought of Iran in terms of literature and study. I certainly assume that there are many scientist and learned people, but I don’t think I’ve ever taken the time to consider educated women and their lives in Iran.

I’m certain I have not often thought of my female counterparts in the country as women who went to college and wore bright, 60s and 70s inspired clothing.

Interesting…these women could have been my mother and your contemporaries studying before class.
