Decorating Mad Men Style

Looking for a more modern take on the style in your home? Think mid-century dwelling or a retro renewal. Blame in on Mad Men, but the look of the 1960′s is neat (60s slang for “good” and “great”). At first I resisted taking the leap, my head overwhelmed with images of mother’s unappealing 1960s faux leather sofa that was described to me as an “heirloom” but was really Southern speak for “left over from Grandma’s house”. Now, after seeing furniture and designs that have taken the minimalism of the 1960s furniture and style and renewed the same for today’s contemporary market, my heart and my eyes have been won over by the trend.

There are a few styles and pieces for which I have developed a special affinity. Platner chairs, named after the 1960s architect and designer Warren Platner, are a fantastic addition to any room of the house and the pieces blend into any decor by adding a slight edge and sense of sophistication to the most traditional spaces. The Saarinen collection by Knoll is hands down one of the most versatile dining sets I have seen in a very long time. It is now on my Christmas list.

An alternative and one of my favorite inspirations is to purchase a vintage piece and reupholster the furniture in a chic, contemporary fabric. It’s a retro renewal.
